About African University College of Communications
AFRICAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATIONS (AUCC), formerly known as the Africa Institute of Journalism & Communications (AIJC), is a private tertiary institution established in 2002 by Hon. Kojo Yankah, former editor ofGhana’s widest circulation newspaper, the Daily Graphic, nine years Director of theGhanaInstitute of Journalism, seven years Minister of State, and eight years Member of Parliament.
The Institute admitted the first batch of Diploma students for its Communication Studiesprogrammein 2002, and was formally accredited as a tertiary institution by the NationalAccreditationBoard (NAB) in 2004.
In 2007, the Institute received another approval from the National Accreditation Board to offer Bachelor of Arts degree courses and became known as the African University College of Communications (AUCC) becoming the first university in Africa to offer journalism and communication studies as its flagship. In 2010, AUCC was again granted accreditation by NAB to offer Bachelor of Science degree courses inBusinessAdministration.
The University College is affiliated with theUniversity of Ghanafor the award of its degrees.
External universities affiliated with AUCC include Simmons College, Emerson College, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Ohio University all based in the USA and the College of Bahamas on the island of Bahamas in North America.
The University College has established several centres and institutions in order to offer opportunities for continuous learning to its students as well as interested members of the general public. These include the Kwabena Nketia Centre for Africana Studies, the AUCC Pensions Academy, the ExecutiveEducationCentre, the AUCC/Mo Ibrahim MediaMonitoringCentre and the AUCC/World Bank Development and Information Centre. The Komla Dumor Centre for Broadcast Journalism is also set to be launched at AUCC on Saturday, October 3, 2015.
In March 2012, a joint radio programme by Level 300 students of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) and their counterparts in Simmons College in Boston, U.S.A. won the “Most Innovative Programming in College Radio” award in New York, USA.
AUCC has been rated as a potential centre of excellence in media and communication studies by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In this regard, AUCC in collaboration with UNESCO works together to organize projects aimed at improving the quality of journalism on the continent. These include the following: consultative meetings on building partnerships with women journalists (December 2010), workshop on Mainstreaming Gender and Minorities into JournalismEducation(April 2012), offering of academic support to the Mass Communication Department of the University of Liberia (2014).
In 2015, AUCC in partnership with UNESCO organised two workshops aimed at improving the science,healthand environmental journalism curriculum in journalism institutions in Ghana as well as a media skills training workshop for journalists to improve upon their reportage of news on science,healthand the environment (May 2015). Again in May 2015, AUCC was awarded the grant from UNESCO’s International Programme for Developmental Communications (IPDC) fund to train journalists on effective climate change reporting.

The mission of AUCC as a higher educational institution is to prepare lifelong learners to become innovative problem-solvers and ethical leaders through excellence in inter-disciplinary teaching, research, and collaboration using a Pan-African framework
