A mother’s grief over her dead infant would not let her rest in peace. 99 years after her child died, was Sue Howard Hardy’s ghost captured on film while morning at a grave? Some believe it was and the ghost of St. Philips Church in Charleston, South Carolina is our story today.

Today St. Philips Church is considered one of the most beautiful churches in America. First built in 1680, it was destroyed by a hurricane. The second church was built in 1723. However that building burned to the ground in 1835. The current church was built in 1835 and finished in 1838. Although the church has been destroyed and rebuilt twice, the churches graveyard was untouched. In fact there are two grave yards for St. Philips Church. The ‘Left’ yard was established in 1768 and is for people not born here. The ‘right’ cemetery is for people born in Charleston.

People interested in the paranormal come to the ‘right’ cemetery because of the picture of Sue Howard Hardy. On June 10th, 1987 Harry Reynolds was testing out a new camera when he came to St. Philips cemetery. As it was closed at the time, Harry simply slipped his camera between the bars of the gate to the cemetery and took enough photos to finish the roll of film.He was shocked to discover that when he developed the film, there appeared to be the ghostly image of a woman mourning at a grave.

Amazed at the image, he sent it and the negatives to Kodak who determined there was nothing wrong with the photo and were unable to explain the woman in the picture. Hearing this, Harry returned to the cemetery and saw the grave the ghost was mourning at was that of Sue Howard Hardy who died of blood loss after giving birth to a still born six days earlier. What’s odd is that the day the baby died was ninety nine years ago to the day that the picture was taken.

Did Harry catch a glimpse of a ghost mourning its own death as well as that of the child she lost?
