About Mexican Family Culture

In traditional Mexican culture there is nothing more important than family.

Mexicans are passionate, proud, religious, but above all they are very family oriented.

One of the most important characteristic of traditional Mexican culture is Mexican family.

Traditionally, in one Mexican household there are three or even four generations; men are sole providers and protectors of the family; women are taking care of the household.

One Mexican wedding tradition is very interesting to analyze when talking about husband-wife relationships in traditional Mexican culture.

The wedding tradition is called the thirteen golden coins. On the day of the wedding, the groom gives his bride thirteen golden coins which represent all of his material belonging.

By giving his wife these thirteen gold coins the groom is showing her that he trusts her to take care of his belongings and himself. In return, by accepting the thirteen golden coins the wife promises to love her husband, respect him and take good care of him.

Nowadays, many things have changed, especially in the industrialized parts of Mexico. However, most important parts of traditional Mexican family culture are still as they were many years ago.

Mexican men are very protective of their wives, sisters, daughters and female cousins. They have great respects for women in general, especially mothers.

Mexicans are still quite family oriented. There are family reunions a couple of times every year, or at least once a year.

In Mexican culture a nucleus, and an expended, family represents the most important social network (support) and Mexicans take care of their family which in return takes care of its each member.

Any Mexican that has a traditional Mexican family is never alone or lonely. Also, he or she has one of the most important things that are a precondition for a successful life which is social support and love.
