Here is what to do:

  • Clean the dryer lint filter after every single load. Lint buildup increases dryer time, prevents proper air flow, and leads to premature component failure. Every year, lint buildup is responsible for thousands of fires in U.S. and Canada. Proper lint removal is critical for the safety of your home.
  • It is also recommended that once a month you clean the lint filter with warm water, detergent and a small bristle brush such as a toothbrush. If there are any tears, damage or dents, replace your dryer lint filter with a new one. Also, since lint also settles in the filter chute of your dryer, clean that area once per season with a long-handle brush or a vacuum attachment.
  • Even if you carefully clean your lint filter, lint and dust will still build up inside your dryer. Once or twice per year, Experts recommend that you disassemble your dryer once or twice a year and use a vacuum and attachment to remove the lint, dirt and dust. • Once per year you should also thoroughly clean your dryer’s entire venting system from the inside of your appliance to the outside vent cap. By using a 20-foot cleaning brush you will easily reach and remove lint buildup from the back of your dryer to the outside of the dryer vent chute.
  • Inspect the area around the dryer’s vent cap outside every few months and make sure it’s clear and unobstructed by leaves, snow or shrubbery. Proper air flow is essential for your dryer to function safely and at it’s most efficient potential.
