Refrigerator is one of the most essential and constantly used appliances in our homes. While we turn the other appliances on and off as needed, refrigerator is on at all times.

This invaluable appliance needs minimal amount of care and maintenance to run seamlessly and effectively.

Basically, the only thing your really need to do for your refrigerator to work well for a long time is clean the condenser coils once a year.

Here is how to do it:

• Disconnect the power to your refrigerator from the electrical outlet. If your unit has an ice maker or water dispenser, shut off the water supply lines.

• Your refrigerator has two sets of coils – the evaporator coils and the condenser coils. The condenser coil, exposed to the ambient air on the refrigerator gets dusty and dirty. It needs regular cleaning to keep doing its job.

• Older refrigerators were designed to have their coils mounted on the back of the unit and can be accessed by moving the refrigerator away from the wall and removing the rear access panel.

• Newer refrigerators commonly have their condenser coils located on the bottom of the unit. On these units the condenser coils can be accessed by removing the toe space panel.

• Once you access the condenser coils, brush away any dirt and dust with a long-handled bristle brush. Use gentle, careful and delicate strokes so you don’t damage the coils.

• If you can see the refrigerator fan, clean it as well. A clean fan will help move the air across the condenser coils more easily.

• Using a plastic attachment on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum any left over dust and dirt on the fan and the condenser coils.

• Plug your refrigerator cord back into the electrical outlet, restart water supply lines if you had turned them off, and carefully move the refrigerator back against the wall without crushing any lines or cords.

Your refrigerator is good to go without interruption for another year!
