Refrigerator is used every day of the year, but it is the appliance most appreciated during the hot months of summer.

The fact is, though, that more refrigerator repairs take place during the summer than at any other season of the year.

Hot weather can be hard on your refrigerator. But there are steps you can take to make sure that your refrigerator does its job efficiently and without incident.

Follow these suggestion to a trouble free refrigerator:

  • Keep refrigerator door closed as much as you can. Every time you open your refrigerator door, cold air is released and your unit must work extra hard to cool the air again.
  • Replace your refrigerator water filter every six to nine months. Old filters limit the water flow and have been known to rupture – and flood your home.

  • Inspect your freezer or refrigerator door seals to make sure that they are in good shape and are not letting the cool air escape.

  • Place your refrigerator in the coolest location in your home, away from heat emitting appliances like the stove or the microwave. Refrigerators located in garages (especially  in hot temperature states like Texas and Arizona) are known for self destructing because of the heat.
  • Don’t place your refrigerator too close to the wall. There should be plenty of room between the wall and the back of your refrigerator unit, so that heat has room to dissipate.
  • Let hot foods or liquids cool off at room temperature before placing them in your refrigerator.
  • Food and liquid should always be covered before being placed in the refrigerator or freezer. Uncovered food creates not only odors but something called “food dust.” This dust can penetrate the freezer compartment and possibly clog up the defrost drain. Ice or water on the freezer floor are signs that the defrost drain is clogged.
  • To maintains wanted freezer temperature without consuming extra electricity, keep freezer full, but not too compactly packed.
  • Clean the lint and dust off your refrigerator condenser coils so your unit doesn’t have to work extra hard to dissipate the heat. This simple task will help prevent your compressor from failing, a good thing, since a failed compressor is the most expensive repair on any refrigerator. Refrigerator and freezer condenser coil cleaning brush comes with detailed instructions and also works great for cleaning dryer lint.

  • Always make sure to install surge protection on your appliances. This easy and sensible undertaking will save you a lot of grief in the long run.

Have a happy, safe and cool summer!
