Most refrigerators are self defrost units so they automatically defrost the ice buildup. Every 6 to 8 hours the cooling coils are slightly heated and any frost that might have accumulated there melts instantly. The water residue drains into a shallow pan at the bottom of the refrigerator or freezer unit. Most of the time there is no need to empty the pan as the water evaporates on its own.
If there is an odor, or if mold starts to grow in the drain pan, it could become a health concern. Remove the drain pan and wash it with warm water and dishwasher soap.
Under your refrigerator and freezer unit, there is located a set of coils and a cooling fan. These components need to be cleaned at least once or twice a year.
