Safe food storage is important at any time of year, but it is essential during the warm weather months.

Here are common sense safety tips for keeping your refrigerator a safe and trustworthy place to keep your food:

• Do not overload your refrigerator – a crowded refrigerator cannot keep foods as cold as they need to be.

• Stack your refrigerator in an orderly fashion – it is safer and more efficient as well as more pleasant and easier to use.

• Rotate foods so that you use the older items first – when you buy new groceries, place them behind the older ones.

• Be familiar with how long foods last – throw away items that have been stored for longer than recommended time periods.

• Go through food bags and discard pieces that are showing signs of mold or going bad – one rotten fruit or vegetable can spoil everything in the bag.

• Make sure that drips from raw meat and raw chicken don’t contaminate other food – especially fruits and vegetables that will be eaten without cooking.

• Always keep milk and dairy products in tightly closed, lidded or covered containers.

• To avoid refrigerator odors  – clear all old, rotting, spoiled or molding foods. Also, keep an open box of fresh baking soda to absorb smells and keep your refrigerator smelling clean and fresh.
