When British zoologist George Robert Waterhouse captured a strange rodent while in the Mount Aleppo area of Syria in 1839, he knew he was looking at something not previously known. Most of his fellow scientists ignored his find because it seemed to have no significant use within the scientific community. The popularity of hamsters as pets grew in the 1930s when a Jewish zoologist returned from Aleppo with 12 little pups and their mother. Source: Scotdir.com
