Answer: There are nine justices currently serving on the Supreme Court of the United States. Of the nine current justices, three are women. Listed in order of seniority, they are: Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice Elena Kagan, and Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In its 220-year history, only four women justices have ever served on the Supreme Court. Three of those four women are currently sitting on the bench today. Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, retired in 2006.
