The discovery of the skeletal remains of ‘Ardi’ in Ethiopia’s Afar desert region are ‘far more important’ than the previous discovery of humans’ oldest ancestor, dubbed ‘Lucy.’ Researchers discovered the fossils just 46 miles from where scientists found Lucy’s species in 1974. Studies of the surrounding volcanic ash reveal that Ardi lived approximately 4.4 million years ago. The fossils reveal a mixture of advanced characteristics as well as primitive traits.
