Two Mexican men who had recently visited Italy, tested positive for coronavirus, said Mexican officials on Friday, confirming the first known cases in the country.
This discovery makes Mexico the second country in Latin America after Brazil, which confirmed the presence of the virus.
According to authorities, one of the patients, a 35-year-old man, was treated at a hospital in Mexico city. Another, 41-year-old man from Hidalgo, kept in isolation in a hotel in the state of Sinaloa in Northwest Mexico, officials said.
According to them, both men had direct contact with an infected person in Italy and with each other during a conference this month in Bergamo, Italy.
