A senior official of the European Union said on Monday that it proposes to discontinue all non-essential travel to the countries of the agreement, to stop the spread of coronavirus, the President and Emmanuel macron, said that national leaders will approve it.
Mr. macron said that the leaders of the member countries discussed and agreed with the proposal of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Ms. von der Leyen said that the leaders of these countries will take a formal decision on Tuesday.
“We propose to introduce temporary restrictions for non-essential travel to the European Union,” she said after a teleconference with the leaders of the G7. “Of course, there are exceptions for citizens who return home, especially if it is health care workers, doctors and nurses“.
Limitation initially will be valid for 30 days and will apply for travel from countries outside the European Union.
It will not limit transfers from one European Union country to another, but some member States have already taken the first steps in this direction. Ten of the 26 countries that comprise the Schengen area without a passport, which allows substantially free movement across continental Europe, has restored border control, partially or fully suspending the rules of the flagship program of the European Union, said the representative of the European Commission.
