WASSCE: A one year Foundation Programme is required

‘A’ levels: AAB or above (Direct entry into undergraduate level)

IB students: 30 points (Direct entry into undergraduate level)

IB French system: Overall mark of 13 in the total average score (All students outside France need a 6.5 IELTS score)

IELTS: 6.5 or above (minimum of 5.5 per each component)

Pearson: 65 or above (minimum of 51 points per component)

Studying Law at Lancaster University Ghana gives you the opportunity to gain a strong awareness of the social, political, cultural and historical dimensions of Law.  Students benefit from the innovative teaching techniques alongside traditional methods of our highly experienced lecturers.  Whilst studying this course, you will develop vital skills in giving presentations, public speaking and team work as well as research and writing skills.

The law undergraduate programme is a 3 year programme.  However you have the option of spending your second year at our main Lancaster campus in the UK.  This is great for those of you who would like to take a year to experience the British culture without putting your studies on hold.  Other benefits of a study abroad year is the opportunity to develop your cultural competence and to widen your global network.  It broadens your education in a new teaching and learning context and provides you with different perspectives on your discipline.

The scheme provides a contextual approach to the study of law and legal doctrine that will enable you to develop a critical understanding of law as part of social, linguistic, institutional and wider cultural practices.

Our law programme meets all the requirements of the Board of Legal Education in Ghana, so our graduates are not required to take the conversion course at The Ghana School of Law (Makola) unlike other external law graduates.

Our programme facilitates engagement with the industry and our current students have had the opportunity to visit organisations as law excursions to Nsawam Prison, The Arbitration Centre as well as other organisations.  Our lecturers encourage inviting practicing lawyers into the classroom to deliver guest lectures as well as show them the practical side of their line of work as well as encouraged to help students integrate the theory and practice of law.

Being a law student includes being part of a Law Society which is an exclusive club for all law students.  It is a supportive community which allows for networking amongst peers and other professionals from a legal background.  Each year, the university dedicates a week to the law students entitled ‘Law Week’ (this is hosted by the Law Society).  During this week the Law Society has various excursions, participates in moot courts judged by Senior Legal minds, host a student symposium – where they present different papers and articles as well as present their point of view and enjoy a day out of Accra to network with each other.  The week is crowned off with a formal Law Week dinner.  “Law week provides an opportunity for students from our Law Society have the opportunity to express themselves and enhance their critical thinking and presentation skills.  It’s great! It’s not all work and no play.  Last year we spent the week having debates, organising symposia and participated in a moot court but we also took a day off to let off steam at the beach – it was fun!” Maame Mensah Bonsu, Law Lecturer.
