Kwame Nkrumah University of Science andTechnology(KNUST) has commissioned theAccraCity Campus and IDL Centre. The project which commenced in December, 2012 was completed at an estimated cost of Ten Million Five Hundred ThousandGhanaCedis (GH¢10,500,000.00). The six-storey edifice and its basement has nine150-seater lecture halls, 120-seater computer and server rooms with several offices and additional two bed sitters within the office block.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor William Otoo Ellis, Vice-Chancellor, mentioned that in fulfilling the university’s initiative of “bringing KNUST closer to the doorstep of students”, the authorities had implemented series of
programmesand initiatives to offer more opportunities to prospective students. In tandem to this, the Institute of Distance Learning (IDL) was restructured in 2005 to offer a complementary platform to the normal conventional lecture room sessions which was delivered on the main campus of the university in Kumasi. The IDL currently runs 17 undergraduate and 13 postgraduate programmes with a student population of about 10,000 in 13 different centres acrossGhana. The institute also has two offshore pilot virtual campuses; one in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a recent one in Nigeria.
He explained that with all these facilities in place, the university still faced a major challenge which affected the growth and expansion of the distance and continuingeducationprogrammes especially in Accra. The problem had been the availability of suitable facilitation rooms and the concomitant high rental charges paid for the use of such facilities. The result was the change of venues, thus creating inconveniences to most of the students. Looking at the trend of increasing student population, it became imperative for the university to acquire its own facilities in some regional capitals to make its services more client-friendly.
Prof. Ellis concluded that plans were currently on-going to select contractors for the Northern Sector Campus at Tamale with negotiations almost concluded on a parcel of land at Takoradi for the Western Campus. He hoped that these activities would help fulfil the university’s goal to make science and technologyeducationaccessible to the citizenry of Ghana.
Kwame Saarah-Mensah, Acting Chairman of the University Council who chaired the ceremony, congratulated the University Council and management for ensuring the establishment of the campus which would undoubtedly make it convenient for workers and other mature students to acquire degrees from KNUST. He added that unlike their generation when the total student population of KNUST was 1750, the trend had changed. KNUST at the moment has more than 40,000 students and thus, it was significant to establish structures like these to accommodate the increasing student population.
Mr. Saarah-Mensah used the opportunity to urge all Ghanaians to sit up and do soul searching to help solve some of the pertinent issues in the country including unemployment. Present at the ceremony were Members of the University Council, the Registrar, Provosts, Directors, Deans, Members of Convocation, The Honourable Municipal Chief Executive for Ga West, the Chiefs and people from Kwabenya, Pokuase and Gbese.
