History

Before 1974, only a fewDepartmentswere offering Postgraduateprogrammesin the University. The Board of Graduate Studies was established in 1974 to coordinate the activities of those few Departments. It was elevated to the status of a School in (2000AD) following a restructuring by the University Council, to empower it face the present challenges of Graduate Studies in the Country.

The Objective of graduate studies atKNUSThas been the training and development ofgraduatesof higher degree Programmes to acquire specialized skills in Science andTechnology, to enable them provide appropriate research initiative and leadership in industry, commerce and other sectors of the national economy. Over the years considerable effort has been made in the various Academic Departments and Faculties to develop graduate programmes that are relevant to the promotion of economic, social, scientific and technology advancement ofGhana. In pursuit of this objective, material and human resources have been appropriately mobilized from within and outside the University to ensure maximum utilization of available potential.

Aims and Objectives

The School of Graduate Studies has the following objectives:

• To train high – level manpower

• To improve student performance

• To solve problems of national and international dimensions
• To contribute to knowledge

• To ensure the relevance of graduate programmes for promotion of economic, social and scientific and technical development inGhana.
• To expand graduate training through developing research and entrepreneurship.
• To mobilize appropriate human and material resources from within and outside the University to ensure maximum utilization of available potential.

The Objectives stated above are in line with the University’s objectives.

Vision Statement

The School of Graduate Studies has the vision of becoming an effective co – ordinating body for graduate programmes in the University by ensuring that graduate programmes are relevant to the development of Ghana and Africa.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the School of Graduate Studies is to create an environment that will facilitate the training of students to acquire higher degrees in specialised fields of Science and Technology to enable them provide appropriate research initiative and leadership in industry, Community and other key sectors of the national economy.
