BRIEF HISTORY OFSUNYANI POLYTECHNIC

Sunyani Polytechnic, thepremiertertiary institution in the Brong Ahafo region ofGhana, is the successor to Sunyani Technical Institute which was established by the Government ofGhanain 1967.

In 1997 the institute was upgraded to its present Polytechnic status by the Polytechnic Law of 1992 (PNDC Law 321) and tasked to provide tertiaryeducationthrough full-time courses in the field of manufacturing, commerce, science,technology, applied science, applied arts and such other areas as may be determined by the authority responsible forhigher education. The PNDC Law 321 was repealed by an act of Parliament, Polytechnics Act, 2007 (Act. 745). The Act expanded the operational realm of the Polytechnic to include the introduction of degree and higher degreeprogrammesand provide opportunities for skills development, applied research and publication of research findings.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A.WASSCE/SSSCE/RSA II (New Scheme) Applicants:-Passes in three (3) Core subjects (English,Mathematics/BusinessMathematics, Integrated Science/Core Scienceor Social Studies and three (3) Elective subjects
B.GCE ‘A’ Level/RSA lll Applicants: – Candidates must have passes in three (3) GCE ‘A’ Level subjects or RSA Stage lll Passes. In addition to the above requirements, candidates must have GCE ‘O’ Level or RSA II Credit passes in 5 subjects includingEnglish and Mathematics. GCE ‘A’ Level Candidates must have a pass in General Paper.
C. DBS Applicants:Candidates must have five (5)DBSpasses.PLUS 5 GCE O’Level credit passesincluding English and Mathematics or 5 RSA II credit passes includingEnglish &BusinessMathematics or5 WASSCE/SSSCE passes including English and Mathematics.
D. LCCI / City and Guilds Pitman’s Qualification:Candidates must have the Advanced Certificate in three (3) relevant subjects plus five (5) passes at the Intermediate Level including Mathematics. Calculation and English Language.
E.MATURE APPLICANTS

i.Must be at least 25 years old
iimust have at least five (5) GCE ‘O’ level credit passes or five(5) SSSCE/ RSA II passesincluding English Language and Mathematics.
iii. Must have at least two years working experience
iv. Must pass a written examination and an interview
v.BECE Certificate is a prerequisite for SSSCE/RSA II / WASSCE applicants.
