Devils Foot Print

Of the most profound, unexplained mysteries of North Carolina, this one just happens to be associated with the most ghoulish character in history. Located in Warren County, just off of State Road 1131, a large stone, also known as The Devil’s Rock, can be found protruding from the quiet Earth. While a rock this size (30 feet long and fifteen feet wide) is essentially quite ordinary for this area, the legend of Devil’s Rock is anything but.

Almost at the exact center of the rock is a rather large foot-like indention. The “footprint”, measuring twelve inches long and one inch deep- has been attributed to non other than Satan himself. Surround the large footprint are small child-like footprints, and even a circular area, about the size of a snare drum, which when tapped, gives off a hollow sound like that of an actual drum.

For generations, the Devil’s Rock has been considered the location of the devil’s nightly festivities; it’s said that while the Devil plays his drum, he and his “children” dance and conjure up new ideas of wickedness of which to spread to the world.

The rock was recently critically damaged by the NCDOT as they dynamited the area in anticipation of a new highway.

Is this rock still the undeclared turf of the devil and his minions? No one knows for sure. But if you intend on visiting one night to find out you should head the warning of the locals well; or your own blood might be among the inexplicable liquids that stain the stone at the Devil’s Rock…
