Melatonin Cures insomnia, but causes nightmares

I prefer taking melatonin or tryptophan to 5 mg of Ambien I have been prescribed. But…Melatonin gives me horrible nightmares and I always wake up screaming. I am not sure just why, but I try to avoid it. Perhaps it’s just my body’s way of telling me not to use it. Each of us has a different metabolism. If I take just a small dose it keeps me asleep for a few hours, but if I take more, the nightmares return. I also have dreams with tryptophan, but they are usually benign.
