You do not have to worry about going through lean years with the gas and oil industry. Since the demand has shown steady increases, such as in Texas oil production, there is no expectation of a decrease in jobs. Production increased 25% from 2011 to 2012 and another 23% as of February 2013.
Additionally, there is a lot of work in Canada – in various places such as Alberta. Then there’s also the Mediterranean, with 33+ trillion cubic feet of gas recently uncovered in Israeli waters. And there’s approximately 7 billion cu. feet of natural gas in one well offshore Cyprus.
These are but a few examples.
