What is the Outlook for Oil Rig IT Jobs?

The oil industry is continually absorbing employees from various lines of work, due to the fact that it requires both physical laborers and professionals. An oil rig needs men and women with varying backgrounds; it cannot function to its best capacity without roustabouts, and strong drillers who can withstand heat and deal with heavy machinery on a daily basis.

On the other hand, an oil company cannot survive without IT personnel manning their computer stations – they are necessary to keep the computers running smoothly – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Thus, there are oil and gas IT jobs for qualified candidates.

Oil Rig IT Jobs: The Outlook for You

When it comes to oil and gas IT jobs, if you have completed a degree in information technology yet have no direct link to geology, mineralogy, or extraction sciences you can still be hired by an oil company. What we cannot assure you, at this point in time, is whether you will be assigned to a land rig or offshore oil rig.

But the important thing is to gain some experience, and make yourself invaluable – especially if you are new to the game.  Then as new opportunities open up, you’ll be among the FIRST to hear about them.

Here are some examples of jobs that fall within the scope of the IT professional.  Please keep in mind that the actual results of applying cannot be assured by anybody.  I am giving you a “wide view” of where you may be able to fit in within the oil industry:

1.    Oil companies often need skilled workers to man international explorations of possible oil deposits around the world.  We’re speaking of incredible opportunities with multimillion dollar companies around the world, who pay just as well as US or British oil companies.

Skilled employees are often asked to maintain or improve existing record systems in order to facilitate the flow of information, to and from the company and mobile exploration teams. An IT professional may also be charged with other duties – and end up performing other roles, if he is requested to do so by the oil company.

2.    If you have experience in programming and data, you quite possibly could be hired directly by an oil rig to perform tasks such as measuring and calibrating flow systems (part of your job would be measuring oil flow), and maintaining a stable data system for the entire oil rig. Realistically speaking, one person can’t do everything, so even if they already have a bunch of IT personnel at the oil rig, an additional hand is almost always welcome. Plus, if you know accounting, or have some other valuable “specialized” experience, it could be a real advantage.

3.    Oil companies also form engineering teams who maintain the stability and efficiency of an entire oil rig.  It is a real team effort. Engineering teams often are comprised of many individuals, each with his/her own skill set and function. Oil rig jobs can never be monopolized by a single field of work, because it takes a big village of skilled and semi-skilled workers to keep things running smoothly. An oil rig will not function well without each “cog” in the machine, so employers pay equal attention to each job candidate who might bring something beneficial to the operation.
