Facts on Mexican Flag History
The very first Mexican flag was considered to be the Standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe that the father Miguel Hidalgo was holding on the September 16, 1810 while inviting all of the Mexicans to unite, to rebel against the Spanish king and to gain their independence from Spain.
From that point on the national Mexican flag was changed or modified many times.
However one thing was consistent throughout the centuries – the national Mexican colors of green, white and red.
The first national and official Mexican flag was created and adopted by the Mexican imperial government in 1821.
After the imperial government was overthrown in 1823 the Constitutional Congress designed and established the first Mexican Republic flag.
In 1864 after the French Intervention in Mexico the Mexican Republic was abolished as well as its flag and the flag of the Second Mexican Empire was designed and established.
In 1867 the Mexican Republic was reestablished and its flag readopted.
From that point on the Mexican flag was not changed any more but it was modified more than once.
For example in 1916 Antonio Gomez redesigned the Mexican Coat of Arms by changing the facing of the eagle from front-facing to side-facing.
On September 16, 1968 the current Mexican flag was adopted and confirmed.
