Stop Puppy Biting Effectively

It’s normal for your puppy to bite or mouth your hand, especially when they’re very young and teething. When teething, biting can help to relieve the pressure, pain and irritation they feel on their young gums, much like when a baby sucks on a teething ring. But as your puppy grows and they become stronger, and once they’re past the teething phase, you may need to incorporate training that can get stop puppy biting before it turns into a behavioral issue.

Your dog can be trained to stop puppy biting just by following consistent instruction from you. Playing with your puppy helps to build a bond between the two of you. Before you attempt to stop puppy biting altogether, work on teaching him or her how to decrease the pressure of the biting. When you’re playing, use the yelping loudly technique to startle your pup, allowing them to realize they’re being too rough. Consistently doing this during play will quickly teach your pup what type of behavior is okay and what type is not.

Your puppy needs to learn that he or she should accept treats gently from your hand and not to get too toothy. To start stop puppy biting training, take a treat and hold it in your hand, wrapping your fingers around it. Regardless of how much your puppy tries to get to the treat, do not let them have it. Instead, wait until their mouth moves away from your hand. This way they will learn that they’re not going to get the treat if they bite.

It’s very important that your other family members use these training techniques and not just you. Consistency plays a big role in how effective training your dog to not bite will be. Anyone who has contact with the dog needs to teach them that it’s not okay to bite and use the same type oftraining techniques, otherwise your puppy will become confused and this can lead to other behavioral issues.
