Central Sleep Apnea Treatment :All you need to know.

The most effective treatment for sleep apnea is nasal continuous positive airflow pressure therapy (CPAP).

There are also surgeries to stop sleep apnea which includes uvulopalatopharyngoplasty where tissue in the throat is removed, laser-assisted uvuloplatoplasty, a safer option done under anaesthetic to vaporise the free edge of the soft palate and uvula by means of a laser. The procedure can be repeated up to four times to achieve the desired result. The tonsils are not removed in this procedure. Unfortunately the patient can experience quite severe post operative pain.

In a tracheostomy a tube is inserted through the opening of the windpipe through the skin of the neck and into the trachea. The idea is to allow free breathing when the airway is blocked or unusable.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the soft palate reduces the volume of the palate tissue. It also improves the texture of the remaining palate to make it more dynamically stable. It is usually performed in the outpatient department procedure under local anaesthetic. By means of an electrode delivery device which directs radio frequency energy (at many different frequencies and levels) radiofrequency energy is directed to the palate, normally to the middlesection from the uvular base to the posterior nasal spine.

Additionally, two lateral applications are often given at a reduced energy level. The procedure can be repeated a number of times if snoring symptoms persist.

The CPAP machine can be used at home on a nightly basis. It consists of a pump that sucks air from the room through a filter. It blows out the air at a pressure adjusted to the needs of the patient. There is a whole range of masks and application accessories for sleep apnea.

The mask is made of soft flexible material and fits comfortably around the nose. There are severalkinds including the nasal mask which leaves the mouth free. It fits over the nose with a good seal so there is no escape of air. Also sometimes used is a full mask to cover the nose and mouth made of soft flexible cushioning material. There is a headgear provided to keep the mask in position while the patient is sleeping.
