You need to get your insomnia facts straight if you believethat you’re one of the many people who suffer from it. 

 

Insomnia is often cited as the culprit whenpeople experience erratic sleeping patterns, difficulty in sleeping and stayingasleep. 

If you find yourself justtossing and turning in your bed and trying everything that you can to fallasleep and yet unable to do so, you’re probably experiencing insomnia.  You may also fall asleep but regularly get wokenup during the night and then find yourself unable to go back to sleep.  This is also another sign that you’re in thethroes of insomnia.  Some people evenwake up from their sleep and yet feel like they haven’t slept at all.  With the hectic pace of life nowadays, moreand more people become beset by insomnia and are wondering how to get over it.

Causesof Insomnia

Some people are actually predisposed to having insomnia,meaning you are more susceptible to insomnia when you fall under these certainconditions.First, when people reach acertain age, like those over the age of 60, they find themselves losing theirability to sleep.They still feel likethey need to sleep but can’t seem to do it and this becomes more evident asthey grow older.Second, though insomniaaffects both genders, females seem to have more problems with it than men,especially after menopause.Third,people suffering from depression often find themselves more prone to insomniathan others.

Even though you may not fall under these categories, you canstill experience insomnia if you are under a lot of stress and your mind issimply too preoccupied to sleep.Studentswho are under a lot of pressure with their grades almost always experienceinsomnia during examination periods.Office workers who desperately want to perform well for a promotion or araise also experience insomnia.

Naturally, if there is incessant environmental noise aroundyour bedroom or place of rest then you also won’t get any sleep at all.It takes all kinds of environmentaldisturbances to affect your sleep depending on how sensitive you are tonoise.Some people can sleep through anearthquake while others can’t sleep with the dripping of a faucet.

Jet lags are also a commoncauseof insomnia.  Changes in your regularsleeping patterns affect your body’s regular set patterns and you end up withinsomnia.  People who work on shiftingschedules are usually affected by insomnia because their bodies continuallyhave to adjust to changing sleeping schedules. Changes in your surrounding environment also induce insomnia.  Some people are sensitive when they sleep inbeds other than their own and they end up with insomnia too. 

There are also other common insomnia facts that peoplealready know.  For instance, if you drinkexcessive amounts of caffeine prior to your bedtime then you’ll surely findhardship when trying to sleep.  Also,many people also experience insomnia when they take a nap during the afternoonor the early evening.  When their regularbedtime comes, they find that they can’t sleep and their minds are still verymuch active. 

Typesof insomnia

Prevention and curing of your insomnia is dependent on thetype of insomnia that you’re experiencing. Transient insomnia is usually short-term and occurs for a single nightto a few weeks.  This is common if thecause of your insomnia is a simple interruption of your sleeping patterns.  Causes like jet lag, simple afternoon napsand excessive caffeine are easily regulated because once you stop them, thecause of insomnia disappears.  Intermittentinsomnia is something that occurs occasionally but only lasts for a shorttime.    Other causes like regaining yourregular body clock or even incessant environmental noise may be a little harderto cure and may happen intermittently for as long as you remain in the samesituation that’s causing your insomnia.  Chronicinsomnia is more complex as it can last for months at a time.  People with chronic insomnia may experienceunderlying physical or mental disorders that cause their insomnia.  The insomnia may also be induced bybehavioral factors like stress, too much caffeine or alcohol and disruptions intheir sleeping and waking patterns. Further evaluation of a person’s medical and sleep history is necessaryto properly diagnose an insomniac. 

Treatmentof insomnia

Knowing the causes and types of insomnia, it’s easier foryou to determine how to treat specific insomnia cases.  Getting familiar with insomnia facts willhelp you understand your insomnia better and thus makes it easier for you toidentify and treat it.  Transient andintermittent insomnias are easier to solve because they only involve the returnto regular sleeping patterns and avoiding unnecessary sleeping during theday.  Chronic insomnia may involvemedical treatment depending on the results of the sleep and other diagnostictests.  You may also benefit fromrelaxation therapy to calm and soothe your mind before sleeping.  Reconditioning the body may also help you getback to their regular sleeping patterns.
