Learn about Teeth Grinding in Adults, Children and Toddlers

Teeth grinding also known as “bruxism”is a sleep disorderthat makes you clench your teeth and keeps you grinding your teeth in sleep.

Though some people prefer to call thissleep problemby it’s clinical name bruxism, it still is a big problem facing many people around the world.

In most cases bruxism is a symptom of a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or also known as TMJ.

This happens when the lower jaw is not properly aligned with the higher jaw.

Bruxism is fairly common amongst Men and Women, though there have also been reports of Bruxism in Children and even cases of toddlers and babies doing it too!

When you have a bruxism episode, you are not aware of it and bedmates can literally hear the sound of the grinding.

The effects of bruxism are an infected gum, a sore jaw and your tooth becoming chipped or in some terrible cases your teeth fall off.

Cause of Bruxism

Bruxism can be caused by a number factors including;

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Oral or Facial Trauma
  • Neurological Disorders and
  • Reaction to Depression Drugs.

Preventing Bruxism

Even though bruxism is an involuntary action, it still can be prevented. Over the years different prevention techniques have been developed from relaxation techniques, to using bruxism night guards, to taking stress management classes.
