As with anything you ingest, it’s important that you findout all you need to know aboutmelatoninbefore you start taking them.

There are many important questions you should ask about this and anyother sleep supplement you may be thinking about taking such as:

Luckily, you’ve come to the right place to have these andmore questions answered.

What Are Melatonin Supplements?

melatonin supplementsIn order to boost the melatonin levels in the body, manypeople turn to supplements.

Even though the body produces melatonin naturally, due to artificiallight, age, and many other factors, your body might not be producingall the melatonin it needs.

If it isn’t, you will probably experience trouble falling asleep, trouble staying asleep and daytime drowsiness.  To remedy thesebouts with periodic insomnia, melatoninsupplementsare an ideal way to make the levels of melatonin secretion regular.

The supplemental forms of melatonin include:

  • Orally ingested capsules and tablets
  • Liquids that can be consumed alone or inbeverages like teas
  • Lozenges that are dissolved under the tongue
  • Creams which are applied externally
  • Sub-lingual forms

Since melatonin is naturally occurring in the human body, supplements must be produced synthetically or extracted from the pinealgland of animals similar to our own body chemistry and composure. Melatonin Supplements for Sleep

Synthetic melatonin supplements are by far the most popular becauseof the cheapness of its production costs, but both forms of supplementwork equally as well.

Are Supplements Safe?

Research has shown that it is safe to use supplemental melatonintablets, capsules, lozenges, creams or any other forms for shortperiods of time.  In essence, they are a safe short term solutionto many types of sleep disorders that may be troubling you.

Unfortunately, long term usage hasn’t been adequately documented toshow any proof that there are or aren’t disadvantages to taking thesupplements for extended periods of time.

While this isn’t conclusively saying that you will or will not haveproblems while taking long-term dosages of melatonin, it is widelyrecommended by doctors and sleep experts that you avoid any extendedusage of supplemental melatonin.

When To Use MelatoninSupplements

While it may start to sound like supplemental melatonin is the “allpowerful sleep problem solver,” be warned that it may not be effectivefor everyone.

For instance, jet laggers, workers on the late shift, people whoexcessively travel and others may not see the desired effects ofmelatonin when taken in supplemental form.

These long-term sufferers may do better to take a closer look attheir sleep habits and sleep hygiene than by taking melatonin.

More often than not, poor sleep hygiene isthe cause for sleeplessness, not low levels of melatonin.

Instead, supplements work better for those who typicallyhave shorter term ailments such asinsomnia caused by depression or insomniathat is transient in nature.

Also, stress related insomnia such as sleeplessness due to the loss of a loved onecan be helped by melatonin.

The one, long-term exception to this general rule isdelayedsleep phase syndrome (DSPS),commonly known as ‘being a night owl.’  Because these people areup later, often with artificial lighting in their rooms or workplaces, and sleep through the morning and well into the afternoon, their timecues are off as are their levels of melatonin due to the lack ofdarkness in their environment.

This doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the person, just that theircircadian clock (the biological clock which regulates sleep/wakecycles), doesn’t trigger the body to drop temperature until earlymorning (5-7 AM), whereas normal phase shift temperature drops occuraround 2 AM.

As such, people suffering from DSPSbenefit greatly frommelatoninsupplements.

Supplement Dosages

Ifyou choose to take supplemental forms of melatonin, it is highlyadvised that you follow the manufacturer’s manual closely or consult aqualified sleep expert to help you with a prescription or at the veryleast, a dosing plan/schedule.

This goes doublewhen you are pregnant, have seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or areadministering it to a child.

As a general rule for dosing, you should always start lowerand work your way up over periods of three days.

For instance, taking melatonin in 0.3-0.5 mg dosages for threedays, seeing the efficacy and then gradually moving up towards 3-5 mgper night is a good plan.

Never go over5-6 mg per night as a melatonin overdose could occur.

Melatonin Overdose

As with any supplement, eventhough melatonin occurs naturally in the body, the risk for taking toomuch melatonin is always there.  Although rare, overdosingsymptom for melatonin supplementsinclude:

  • Hypothermia
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Tremors
  • Hangover effect
  • Ataxia
  • Disorientation
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Weakness
  • Disorientation
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Liver Issues
  • Eye Issues
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Nightmares
  • Upset Stomach
  • Seizures
  • Speech Impedient
  • Physcotic Speech Impedient

Using Melatonin Supplements Properly

Finally, it’s important to recognize that supplemental formsof melatonin are not to be used as a replacement for asleeping pill.  This includes using it as a full-timereplacement or even for just one day.

Supplementalmelatonin does not induce sleep like a sleeping pill does; it simplylevels out the amounts of melatonin already naturally occurring in yourbody back up to normal levels.

This helps you“get back on track” in a way, much more so than it makes you drowsy orcauses you to actually sleep.  Essentially, it helps yourbody help yousleep more than they actually helpyousleep.

Deficientlevels of melatonin in the brain can be caused by any number of things,so taking supplements for short period of time can help correct thesymptom.

Unfortunately, if the underlying causes for the deficiency are nottemporal in nature, you will have to treat these causes first beforeultimately achieving your ideal sleep/wake cycles.

Lastly, it’s important to note that you not use supplementsduring the day; they are to be taken one hour before bed, the naturaltime that your body would be secreting melatonin on its own were it notdeficient.
