Facts About Mexican Language

What is the official language in Mexico?

There is no de jure official language in Mexico however Spanish is de facto language spoken by the vast majority of Mexican people (close to 97% of population).

In fact, Mexico has the largest Spanish-speaking population in the World, so much so that almost a third of all Spanish native speakers in the World live in Mexico.

However, despite these facts Mexico is a country with 63 national languages (Spanish and 62 indigenous languages).

Sixty two indigenous Languages of Mexico are: Nahuatl (Mexicano, Mexicanero, Nahuat, etc), Yucatec Maya, Mixtec, Zapotec, Tzeltal Maya, Otomi, Totonac, Mazatec, Chol Mayan, Huastec, Chinantec, Mixe, Mazahua, Tarascan, Tlapanec, Tarahumara, Amuzgo, Chatino, Tojolabal, Popoluca, Chontal de Tabasco, Huichol, Mayo, Tepehuan, Trique, Cora, Popoloca, Huave, Cuicatec, Yaqui, Qanjobal, Tepehua, Pame, Mam, Chontal de Oaxaca, Chuj, Tacuante, Chichimeca jonaz, Guarijio, Chocho, Pima Bajo, Qeqchi, Lacandon, Jakaltec, Matlatzinca, Seri, Ixcatec, Kiche, Kaqchikel, Paipai, Cicapa, Mototzintleco, Kumiai, Papago, Kikapu, Ixil, Cochimi, Kiliwa, Aguacatec, Opata, Soltec and Papabucan.

Indigenous Mexican language Nahuatl speak over 1 300 000 Mexicans, Yucatec Maya speak over 700 000 Mexicans, however some other indigenous languages are very close to become dead languages such as Kiliwa language (53 speakers) or Aguacatec language (25 speakers).

It is unfortunate that many indigenous languages that are spoken in Mexico for centuries, are now close to became dead languages because the Mexican linguistic diversity is one of the great parts of the traditional Mexican culture.

Mexicans are very proud of the fact that their country is so diverse and that it represents true anthropological treasure.

Hopefully the Mexican government will do something to preserve these indigenous languages because by doing so they will preserve the great part of the Mexican culture.

Spanish language is great and beautiful language and it is inseparable part of Mexican culture but so are the indigenous languages that have been there long before Spanish was introduced to the North America.
